Home Remedies for Diaper Rash that Work!

It is important to use home remedies for diaper rash as opposed to conventional baby care products. Conventional ointments and baby wipes contain toxic chemicals that are the last things an infant needs on its delicate skin.

Disposable diapers are another problem as most diaper rashes are caused by prolonged skin contact with irritants such as friction, moisture, or chemical substances. Disposables contain adhesives, plastics and chemicals and they are filling up our landfills, wreaking environmental havoc.

Try to use organic cloth diapers instead. If this is not possible, natural, chemical free disposables are available. Although more expensive, they are free of problematic chemicals. Same goes for baby wipes. Use all natural when possible. Otherwise, use a damp, moist cloth. These natural products are great home remedies for diaper rash.

Anything that goes on the skin is easily and readily absorbed into the blood stream and eventually makes its way through the liver, kidneys and other organs. Infants and children are especially vulnerable to toxins, so let's make sure that we use only natural home remedies for diaper rash on our babies.

Diaper rash can be caused by improper digestion of food as well as allergic reactions to foods. A good infant pro-biotic (healthy flora and fauna for the colon) is an important home remedy for diaper rash and will prevent a yeast infection (thrush) which is a common cause of diaper rash (usually manifests as tiny, raised red bumps).

Also important to take note of what baby (mama if breastfeeding), has eaten before diaper rash has appeared. Common culprits are tropical fruit, other acidic foods and dairy based formulas. Breast milk, another home remedy for diaper rash, is sterile and contains antibodies that build baby's immunity and protect him/her from skin rashes and other problems.

Another issue is talcum powder. Talc is a toxic ingredient similar to asbestos. Listed on the Environment Canada Domestic Substance List as a substance that is "expected to be toxic or harmful," talc is commonly found in conventional baby powder where it's used as an absorbent, anti-caking agent. Asbestos-containing talc particles have been known to cause tumors in human ovaries and lungs, according to the American Cancer Society. Use cornstarch or a natural, talc free baby powder (see below under "Remedies")

A tablespoon of baking soda in baby's bath will turn his/her bathwater into a soothing balm and consitutes another important home remedy for diaper rash. Make sure you change baby frequently and baby's bottom isn't always covered.
