The Holistic Approach in Medicine
What’s it all about, the holistic approach in medicine? What are people talking about when they say they’re into holistic medicine or a holistic lifestyle? Is it just about tofu and brown rice, yoga and chamomile tea? Or does it go a little further, strike a little deeper?
Europe and America are the only places on this planet where the holistic approach in medicine has been abandoned. In these places, you go to a doctor for your body, a therapist or a psychiatrist for your mind, and a priest, minister or rabbi for your spirit. But if you step onto an Indian reservation, or visit the African bush, or venture into the rain forest, you will find indigenous healers who practice the holistic traditions of their ancestors; secret practices so ancient, so sacred, that even today, they are jealously guarded by the few who remain to carry them on.
| These holistic approaches in medicine are based upon one primary, fundamental, underlying, truth: mind, body and spirit are one. |
They cannot be separated. Modern society’s attempt to do just that has created a mind/body split which is responsible for much of the suffering, both individual and collective, that afflicts the world today.
So the holistic approach in medicine means addressing the whole person, not the diseased part. Holistic means - if the fast foods, the fried foods, the sodas, the pizzas and the candy have made you toxic on the physical level, then your thinking, even your behavior, will also be toxic. Holistic means that your exhaustion, your depression, and your anger are not far behind your coffee, your chips and your chocolate cake. Holistic means that your cancerous malignancy is a reflection of your spiritual malaise.
| When an indigenous person becomes ill, the first thing he or she will do is enter the sweat lodge. |
The purpose is purification, not only the sweating out of the toxins and poisons that have caused the physical illness, but a mental and spiritual cleansing which must also occur if healing is to happen.
The holistic approach in medicine also means that “cure” is an illusion. There is no such thing as a cure, not for anything. Cure says that even though we don’t eat right, even though we don’t live right, even though we continue to abuse our bodies with junk foods, drugs, alcohol and toxic medications, all we have to do is swallow a little, round white thing and POOF! Just like magic, it will“FIX” us!
But there is no magic bullet, there is no quick fix. What there is, is healing, a process. A process that never ends. Healing is like an onion, you peel away one layer and there’s always another underneath. No matter how healthy you get, there’s more healing work to be done. Holistic medicine does work, but it does take effort and discipline to get healthy and stay that way.
You don’t have to change your lifestyle and what you eat overnight. What’s important is to put your foot on the path and begin the journey. Sometimes it’s not easy, but the results are so overwhelmingly positive, so transformational, that it’s crazy not to try. Once you taste the rewards, you will be motivated to take the next step. Trust the process. Whenever you begin to align yourself with the natural order, things fall into place.
The holistic approach in medicine cannot work simultaneously with pharmaceuticals that have side effects worse than the original problem. There must be an end point for the meds, a gradual weaning off process (in cooperation with your physician).
| You must address the cause of the problem and you must do so in harmony with the laws of nature. |
These laws apply to everything and everyone. There is no escaping them. Sooner or later, the medications will interfere with the healing process because they are toxic and your body is not designed to digest them.
You have the power to stop the loss of your natural born birthright, the right to a vibrant, energized existence. Stepping onto the holistic path is the key: living and eating as holistically as possible, and when sick, utilizing the holistic approach in medicine.
So the next time you’re looking for a snack, try an apple instead of an Almond Joy, try an orange instead of an Oreo. And the next time you're sick, find a practitioner that incorporates the holistic approach in medicine.
| These are the choices that determine the quality and length of your life. Choose wisely!
